Spring flower arranging at Fairfield

We learnt how to make a beautiful spring flower arrangement

Spring flower arrangements Fairfield home

Flowers always bring joy to the beholder, but even more so if they are beautifully arranged to make the most of their colour, form and size, which is why flower arranging is always a popular class at Fairfield. Many of our residents frequently used to arrange flowers when they were in their own homes but the opportunity to do so happens less often nowadays. They were therefore delighted to turn their hand to this skill once again with a visit to Fairfield by Penny Blossom for a class in flower arranging.

Penny brought along a selection of seasonal flowers and greenery and talked us through the basics for creating a stunning flower arrangement. The starting point is the size of the container and the height of the flowers themselves, to create a skeleton framework from the foliage that can then be filled with more foliage and then flowers. It was then our turn to make our own flower arrangement.

Activities like flower arranging bring so much pleasure to our residents as well as keeping their hands and minds busy

We each used a round pot that had been filled with damp oasis to stand the flowers in. The central point of our arrangements was a tall cream flower with beautiful green leaves that we then surrounded with other shorter cream and apricot coloured flowers to create a stunning display that was visible when viewed from all angles. It being a spring flower arrangement, we used a selection of different coloured chrysanthemums and bright daisies with some variegated leafed foliage and pieces of conifer leaf to give a touch of darker green.

Alison Parry, Fairfield’s manager said, “Activities like flower arranging brings so much pleasure to our residents as well as keeping their hands and minds busy. We have a lot of very talented artists at Fairfield and this was evident in the amazing flower arrangements that they produced for everyone else here to enjoy.”

When we had finished we put the spring flower displays on show in the dining room and lounge for everyone to admire. We had to admit that taking a bit of time to arrange a bunch of flowers make such a difference!
